BRUH! The Descendantz are dope, if you grew up in the 90’s era liquid lyricism, live beats, hard beats, rhymes flowing like a breeze through the trees, than this is the album for you. “Little Kingdoms” is more than just a throw back, although the style will make you reminisce. After the intro “Rome” a brief excerpt about fallen kingdoms, “1Million” rocks with a roots inspired live band boogie as Eddie Nigma’s lyrics roll like a roller coaster touching topics, boiling down to one line “yeah I’m known to spit a bar or two, but rather be remembered as a Godly dude”, word! “Point of it All” featuring Joshua Penn and Exilian, comes in with Dj Morph’s on point rapid fire cuts and slices served over a bell resounding groove beat as rhymes saturate the rhythm about living the daily grind and questioning what’s the purpose? “Clockwork Universe” featuring Fern and Erick Dayz, bounce verses off of the Redman sample sliced hook (as the planets and the stars and the moon collapse) depicting Gods influence in each emcees life, whether being used by God to affect others or people being used to bring change into their life.
“Undeniable” featuring Erick Dayz, Selah The Corner and Datin, has them slaying the hand street banger with clever word play and witty anecdotes going hard for Jesus. “Rollin’ Dolo” featuring Erick Dayz, floats words of wisdom about manhood and being gospel mission minded over a jazzy melodic beat. “Too Real” featuring Christian Joshua and Avenue, changes up the flow with an upbeat bounce skate style track as three emcees spit classic God inspired lyrics about the spirit filled life that splashes into the catchy R&B hook.
“Once Again” allows Dj Morph to speak with his hands, dropping an arsenal of flares, stabs, slices, and fade ins to create a mini sermon declaration using the recognizable vocals of rapper Common. “Dream Chaser”, Eddie Nigma weaves a word tapestry of dream like blended events and ideas to a familiar hypnotic harp and strings over a snapping double tap snare and the legendary BIG lets us know, “it was all a dream.
” The sci-fi funk of “Nomad” has Eddie’s rhymes running with purpose and innovation to forward moving pedal percussion strikes letting the block know he’s different than the usual. “Boom (Life is Beautiful)” is fueled by throw back references painting a timeline journey celebrating the Descendantz lives in and out of the music game, the hook is crafted with pieces of the memorable rhymes of Q-tip and Busta Rhymes.
“Little Kingdoms” ends its 12 track journey with the introspective truth of “Come Home”, a respectful love note to the hard working dads that sacrifice 80 plus hours, hold down two jobs and do whatever is needed to provide for their family, salute!
The Descendantz combo kick of Elpro’s production, Eddie Nigma’s lyrics, and Dj Morph’s cutz, are a welcome breathe of fresh air mixed with memories of Hip-Hops golden age. “Little Kingdoms” is a must have classic in the making and is certified straight ministry heat!!!
